Naivasha’s unusual national park

Hell’s Gate tour: cycle and walk the gorge

Cliffs, a narrow gorge and open grassland you can explore on a bicycle or on foot — a short drive from Lake Naivasha hotels, planned as a private day rather than a packed group departure.

Why Hell’s Gate is different from a game-drive park

Most Kenyan parks keep you inside a vehicle. Hell’s Gate National Park, just south of Lake Naivasha, is one of the few places where visitors may cycle the park road and walk the gorge when conditions allow. The landscape is volcanic: red cliffs, isolated rock towers and a cut of rock that gives the park its name.

Transcend collects you from a Naivasha hotel, arranges bicycles if you want them, and keeps the day private. Park rules, gorge access and wildlife on the road still belong to the wildlife service — we plan around them, we do not control them.

Cycling the park road

A mostly gentle ride between cliffs, with stops for zebra, giraffe or buffalo when they are on the grassland. You can skip the bike and use the vehicle if anyone in the party prefers not to ride.

Walking the gorge

The lower gorge is a guided walk between high walls. After rain it can close or turn muddy. We treat gorge access as weather-dependent, not a promised slot.

Cliffs and rock towers

Fischer’s Tower and the cliff line are the photographs people remember. The park sits beside Kenya’s geothermal country — steam vents are part of the wider landscape, not a theme-park ride.

Wildlife on a walking park

Plains game uses the same roads you cycle: zebra, giraffe, buffalo, gazelle and baboons are the usual animals. Predators are uncommon on the main circuit, which is why walking is permitted — uncommon is not the same as impossible. Stay with your guide, give buffalo space, and do not treat the park like a city bike path.

This is not a substitute for a Maasai Mara safari. It is a landscape and movement day that happens to include wildlife.

After the cycle or gorge

Relax at Olkaria Geothermal Spa

After cycling, hiking or touring Hell’s Gate, visitors can include a geothermal spa visit where available. Olkaria Geothermal Spa sits inside the park, is run by KenGen, and is listed by Kenya Wildlife Service among Hell’s Gate attractions.

The dedicated page covers location, what to expect, combinations with a Naivasha boat experience or Crescent Island, and what to carry. This page stays with the park road and gorge.

Who the day suits

Active couples, families with children who can ride a bicycle, and guests who have already done a boat morning and want to be out of the car. It is a poor fit if anyone needs a fully seated game drive or if you dislike heat and dust.

Day-trip planning

From a Naivasha hotel the park is a short drive, so a half day or full day both work. From Nairobi it becomes a full outing — see Naivasha day trip from Nairobi. We often put a Lake Naivasha boat safari in the cooler morning and Hell’s Gate after lunch — or the reverse if you want the gorge before it warms. The geothermal spa can follow the park when hours allow.

Pickup is from your hotel or, if you are coming from the city, via a private Nairobi–Naivasha transfer. There is no public coach departure to join. Lakeside rooms can be requested on hotels.

Last verified: 25 September 2026. Gorge access, bicycle hire and park entry are set by Kenya Wildlife Service and can close or change after rain. We confirm current rules in your quote. More Naivasha days sit on the Naivasha tours hub.

What to carry

Closed shoes

Essential for the gorge. Sandals belong at the hotel.

Water and sun

Little shade on the road. Carry more water than you think.

Light layers

Cooler in the gorge, hotter on the cycle. A light shirt over sun-sensitive skin helps.

Small cash / ID

Park tickets are arranged in the plan we send you. Personal spending stays simple.

Bicycle hire and park entry are confirmed in the quote. We do not list invented hire rates here.

Hell’s Gate questions

Do we have to cycle?

No. Walking sections and a vehicle for the road are possible if someone in the party does not want a bicycle.

Is the gorge always open?

No. Rain and rockfall can close it. We check closer to the day and reshape the visit if needed.

Can children do Hell’s Gate?

Many families do, if children are comfortable on a bike or happy to walk shorter sections. Tell us ages so we do not over-plan the gorge.

Can we add Longonot the same day?

Hell’s Gate plus a full Longonot crater hike is ambitious. We usually pick one mountain effort and keep the other for a second day.

Can we add Olkaria Geothermal Spa?

Yes, where the spa is open. After the cycle or drive, we continue to the KenGen pools inside the park. Details live on the Olkaria Geothermal Spa page — we do not reprint spa charges here.
