Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site: coral-stone houses, carved doors and lanes too narrow for ordinary cars. Donkeys and boats still do the carrying. The harbour is the living room — dhows, waterfront houses and a tide that sets the day’s pace.
Transcend requests a house or small hotel, the Manda flight and the boat across the channel. We do not run the Old Town, the mosques or the dhow captains. Those belong to the island. Dress and behaviour in the lanes should stay modest; this is a living Swahili town, not a theme park.

Scheduled flights land on Manda Island. The last metres are by boat. Domestic seats sit on flights.
Lamu rewards people who like walking, swimming and dinner in the same small radius. Nightlife is modest on purpose.
Malindi is a mainland town with an airstrip and hotel beaches. Lamu is an island plan. See Malindi if you want the north-coast road instead.
Couples and repeat Kenya visitors who want culture with the swim. Photographers who like lanes and boats. Anyone who found Diani too busy. It is a weaker fit if you need late restaurants every night, a kids’ club, or a same-day link to Mombasa meetings.
Fly to Manda, then boat to the town or Shela. Four nights is the short version; a week lets the wind decide a dhow day. This is not a road transfer from Watamu. Bags should be soft — boats and stairs, not hotel trolleys.
Old Town houses put you in the lanes. Shela and nearby beaches put you nearer swimming. We request the room; we do not operate it. Quotes beat any rate on a screenshot.
Modest clothes for town, a hat, reef shoes if you walk out at low tide, and a small torch for unlit lanes. Leave the hard safari trunk. Cash still helps on an island. Hotel rates and boat connections are confirmed in the quote — we do not publish a Lamu fee table.
Ordinary cars do not belong in Old Town. Donkeys, boats and walking do the work. That is part of why the stay feels different.
It can be, especially if you sleep in Shela or on a quieter shore. Many guests come as much for the town and harbour as for the sand.
