Watamu sits in Kilifi County, north of Mombasa, beside Watamu Marine National Park. The water is the point: clear shallows, coral that can be visited when the park and sea state allow, and beaches that still feel like a village shore rather than a continuous hotel wall.
Transcend requests cottages and small hotels, a private transfer from Malindi or Mombasa, and any boat time that is actually running. We do not own the marine park, the reefs or the turtle projects that guests sometimes visit. Those experiences follow local rules and seasons.

Couples who found Diani too busy. Repeat Kenya visitors who already did the south coast. Families who want snorkel water more than a large kids’ club. It is a weaker fit if you need late restaurants every night or a same-day link to Mombasa meetings — use Mombasa for that.
Reef shoes if you walk out at low tide, a long-sleeve swim layer, and patience for windy afternoons. The marine park can close boats when the sea is rough. Pack for humidity, not for alpine mornings. If you are coming from a safari, wash the dust out of one set of clothes before you put on a snorkel mask.
It is different. Diani is a long resort beach near Mombasa. Watamu is a marine-park village further north. Choose water and quiet versus scale and easy city access.
